Glenford Summary

Glenford is a small village located in Perry County, Ohio, United States. The village is situated along the banks of the Muskingum River, approximately 10 miles south of the county seat of New Lexington. The population of Glenford was estimated to be 545 in the year 2000.

Geography

Glenford is located at 39°45'45" North, 82°14'45" West (39.7625, -82.2458). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.

History

Glenford was founded in 1817 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The village was named after the nearby Glenford Creek, which was named after the glen (valley) that the creek ran through. The village was incorporated in 1837.
In the late 19th century, Glenford was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several mills, including a grist mill, a saw mill, and a woolen mill. The village also had a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a post office.

Economy

The economy of Glenford is largely based on agriculture. The village is home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, and wheat. The village also has a few small businesses, including a gas station, a convenience store, and a restaurant.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 545 people, 212 households, and 152 families residing in the village. The population density was 890.3 people per square mile (344.3/km2). There were 226 housing units at an average density of 369.2 per square mile (142.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 98.51% White, 0.37% African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.18% Asian, and 0.74% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.37% of the population.
There were 212 households, out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.5% were married couples living together, 9.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.3% were non-families. 24.5% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.57 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.3% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.3 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
