History

Gibsonburg was founded in 1854 by John Gibson, a native of Pennsylvania. He purchased the land from the government and laid out the village. The village was incorporated in 1867.

Geography

Gibsonburg is located at 41°20'45" North, 83°17'45" West (41.3458, -83.2958). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all land.

Economy

Gibsonburg is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a bank. The village also has a post office and a library.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,741 people, 645 households, and 463 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,919.2 people per square mile (739.3/km2). There were 676 housing units at an average density of 745.2 per square mile (288.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.90% White, 0.17% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.17% Pacific Islander, 0.17% from other races, and 1.15% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.80% of the population.
There were 645 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.3% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 24.3% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.12.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 28.3% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 20.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
