Geneva Summary

Geneva is a city located in Ashtabula County, Ohio, United States. It is situated on the shore of Lake Erie, approximately 60 miles east of Cleveland. The population was 6,743 at the 2010 census. Geneva is part of the Ashtabula, Ohio Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Geneva was first settled in 1805 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The town was named after Geneva, New York, the hometown of some of the settlers. The first post office was established in 1817. The town was incorporated in 1832.
In the late 19th century, Geneva was a popular summer resort for wealthy Clevelanders. The town was home to several large hotels, including the Geneva Hotel, which was built in 1876 and burned down in 1891.

Geography

Geneva is located at 41°45'25"N 80°48'45"W (41.756944, -80.8125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

Economy

Geneva's economy is largely based on tourism and agriculture. The city is home to several wineries, including Ferrante Winery and Grand River Cellars. The city is also home to several restaurants, including the Geneva Inn and the Lakehouse Inn.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 6,743 people, 2,845 households, and 1,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,068.2 people per square mile (1,183.3/km2). There were 3,093 housing units at an average density of 1,400.2 per square mile (540.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.35 and the average family size was 2.90.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 23.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $50,938. Males had a median income of $41,944 versus $27,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 11.2% of those under age 18 and 6.2% of those age 65 or over.
