Eaton Summary

Eaton is a city located in Preble County, Ohio, United States. The population was 8,407 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Preble County. Eaton is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Eaton was founded in 1806 by William Bruce, who named the town after his friend William Eaton, a Revolutionary War hero. The town was incorporated in 1837.
In the early 19th century, Eaton was a major stop on the National Road, which connected the Ohio River to the Great Lakes. The road was the first federally funded highway in the United States.

Eaton is home to several major employers, including Eaton Corporation, a global power management company; Eaton Aerospace, a manufacturer of aerospace components; and Eaton Steel, a steel manufacturer.
The city is also home to several small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 8,407 people, 3,521 households, and 2,279 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,619.2 people per square mile (625.2/km2). There were 3,845 housing units at an average density of 745.2 per square mile (287.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 1.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 3,521 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.2% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.37 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.3% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 23.2% from 45 to 64, and 16.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.3 males.
