Cumberland Summary

Cumberland, Ohio is a small village located in Guernsey County, Ohio. It is situated on the banks of Wills Creek, a tributary of the Muskingum River. The village is located approximately 25 miles east of Cambridge, Ohio and is part of the Cambridge Micropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Cumberland was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

Cumberland was founded in 1806 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The village was named after Cumberland, Maryland, the hometown of one of the settlers. The village was incorporated in 1817 and was the first village in Guernsey County.
In the early 19th century, Cumberland was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several mills, including a grist mill, a saw mill, and a woolen mill. The village also had a blacksmith shop, a tannery, and a distillery.
In the late 19th century, Cumberland began to experience a decline in population as many of its residents moved away to larger cities. The village was also affected by the Great Depression and World War II.

Geography

Cumberland is located at 39°55'25"N 81°37'45"W (39.923750, -81.629167). The village is situated on the banks of Wills Creek, a tributary of the Muskingum River. The village is located approximately 25 miles east of Cambridge, Ohio and is part of the Cambridge Micropolitan Statistical Area.
The village has a total area of 0.6 square miles, all of which is land. The village is located in a hilly region of Ohio and is surrounded by farmland.
