Craig Beach Summary
Beachwood, Ohio is a city located in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. It is a suburb of Cleveland and is located approximately 10 miles east of downtown Cleveland. The population of Beachwood was 11,953 at the 2010 census.
History
Beachwood was first settled in 1820 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The area was originally known as "Euclid Township" and was part of the Connecticut Western Reserve. In the late 19th century, the area was known as "Beachwood" after the Beachwood Hotel, which was built in 1876. The hotel was a popular destination for wealthy Clevelanders who wanted to escape the city for a weekend.
In 1915, Beachwood was incorporated as a village. The village was named after the Beachwood Hotel, which was located on the corner of Richmond Road and Fairmount Boulevard. The hotel was demolished in the late 1920s.
Geography
Beachwood is located at 41°28′17″N 81°30′45″W (41.471445, -81.512599). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.45 square miles (14.11 km2), of which 5.44 square miles (14.09 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.02 km2) is water.
Economy
Beachwood is home to many corporate headquarters, including Aleris International, American Greetings, Forest City Enterprises, and National Interstate Insurance. The city is also home to the corporate headquarters of the Cleveland Clinic, one of the largest healthcare systems in the United States.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 11,953 people, 5,093 households, and 3,072 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,190.3 people per square mile (845.3/km2). There were 5,521 housing units at an average density of 1,011.3 per square mile (390.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 81.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.1% Native American, 8.3% Asian, 0.7% from other races, and 1.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.3% of the population.
There were 5,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 9.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 39.3% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.33 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.7% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 90.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.3 males.
