Clay Center Summary

Clay Center is a village located in Sandusky County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,093 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Fremont, Ohio Micropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Clay Center was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The village was named after Henry Clay, a prominent statesman of the time. The first post office was established in 1838.

In 1854 the first schoolhouse was built in Clay Center The village was incorporated in 1867

According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 431 households, and 298 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,845.2 people per square mile (711.7/km2). There were 463 housing units at an average density of 776.3 per square mile (299.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.99% White, 0.09% African American, 0.09% Native American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.37% from other races, and 1.27% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.64% of the population.
