History

Chesapeake was founded in 1867 by a group of settlers from the nearby town of Proctorville. The town was named after the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway, which ran through the area. The town was incorporated in 1875.
In the late 19th century, Chesapeake was a thriving river port, with a large number of businesses and industries. The town was home to a number of coal mines, and the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway had a large presence in the area.
