Catawba Summary

Catawba, Ohio is a small village located in the southeastern corner of Ottawa County, Ohio. It is situated on the banks of the Portage River, which flows into Lake Erie. The village is located approximately 25 miles east of Toledo and is part of the Toledo Metropolitan Statistical Area. The population of Catawba was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Catawba was founded in 1837 by a group of settlers from Catawba County, North Carolina. The village was originally known as Catawba Station, as it was a stop on the Toledo, Norwalk and Cleveland Railroad. The village was officially incorporated in 1867.
The village was named after the Catawba Indians, who were the original inhabitants of the area. The Catawba were a Siouan-speaking tribe that lived in the area for centuries before the arrival of European settlers. The Catawba were eventually forced out of the area by the Iroquois and other tribes.

Geography

Catawba is located at 41°25'N, 82°59'W (41.4167, -82.9833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all of it land.
The village is located on the banks of the Portage River, which flows into Lake Erie. The village is located approximately 25 miles east of Toledo and is part of the Toledo Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Economy

The economy of Catawba is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant. The village also has a marina on the Portage River, which is popular with boaters and fishermen.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 298 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,541.7 people per square mile (595.3/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 667.9 per square mile (258.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.06.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.7% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older.
