History
Carey was founded in 1845 by John Carey, a local landowner. The village was incorporated in 1854. The village was named after Carey, who donated the land for the village.

Economy
The economy of Carey is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The village is home to several manufacturing companies, including a plastics plant, a metal fabrication plant, and a food processing plant.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 3,743 people, 1,521 households, and 990 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,179.4 people per square mile (843.7/km2). There were 1,637 housing units at an average density of 945.3 per square mile (364.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,521 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
