Canal Winchester is a city located in Fairfield and Franklin counties in the state of Ohio. It is a suburb of Columbus, the state capital, and is located about 15 miles southeast of the city. The population of Canal Winchester was 7,101 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Canal Winchester was first settled in 1828 by Reuben Dove, a Revolutionary War veteran. The town was originally known as “Dove’s Landing” and was located along the Ohio and Erie Canal. The town was renamed “Canal Winchester” in 1835 after the canal was completed.
The town grew rapidly in the late 19th century due to the construction of the National Road and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad. The town was incorporated in 1838 and was home to several factories, including a flour mill, a sawmill, and a brickyard.

Canal Winchester is located at 39°52'45" North, 82°48'45" West (39.879167, -82.8125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles, all of it land.
