Campbell Summary

Campbell, Ohio is a city located in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. The population was 8,235 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Youngstown-Warren-Boardman, OH-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Campbell was founded in 1876 by John Campbell, a Scottish immigrant who had come to the United States in 1851. He purchased a large tract of land in the area and began to develop it. He built a sawmill, a grist mill, and a woolen mill, and the town grew around these businesses. The town was incorporated in 1891.
In the early 20th century, Campbell was a major center for steel production. The city was home to several steel mills, including the Campbell Steel Company, which was founded in 1902. The steel industry was the main source of employment for the city's residents until the late 1970s, when the mills began to close.

Geography

Campbell is located at 41°7′17″N 80°37′17″W (41.121400, -80.621300). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
There were 3,541 households, out of which 25.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 38.7% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.93.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,917, and the median income for a family was $35,938. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $22,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,938.
