Berkey, Ohio is a small village located in Lucas County, Ohio. It is situated on the banks of the Maumee River, approximately 10 miles southwest of Toledo. The village was founded in 1836 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania and New York. The population of Berkey was 1,093 at the 2000 census.

Berkey is located at 41°37'17" North, 83°41'45" West (41.6214, -83.6958). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 0.7 square miles (1.8 km2), all land.

Berkey’s economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station. The village also has a post office and a library.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 305 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 463 housing units at an average density of 651.2 per square mile (251.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 10.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 26.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.7 males.
