Belle Center was founded in 1832 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The village was named after the nearby Belle Center Church, which was named after the daughter of one of the original settlers. The village was incorporated in 1867.
In the late 19th century, Belle Center was a thriving agricultural community. The village was home to several businesses, including a sawmill, a grist mill, a blacksmith shop, a general store, and a hotel.
