Barber Company, which manufactured mining equipment for the coal industry. He also founded the Diamond Match Company, which was the largest match manufacturer in the world at the time. In the early 20th century, Barberton was known as the "Magic City" due to its rapid growth and development. The city was home to many immigrants, including Italians, Poles, and Slovaks, who worked in the factories and businesses. The city also had a large African American population, which was concentrated in the south side of the city.

Barberton is located at 41°02′N 81°25′W (41.037, -81.417). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.7 square miles (22.6 km2), of which 8.6 square miles (22.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.3 km2) is water.

Barberton's economy is largely based on manufacturing and industry. The city is home to several large companies, including the O.C. As of the 2010 census, there were 26,550 people, 10,845 households, and 6,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 3,072.3 people per square mile (1,186.3/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 8.3% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 10,845 households, out of which 28.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 12.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 3.00.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 16.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
