Albany Summary

Albany is a small village located in Athens County, Ohio, United States. It is situated along the Hocking River, approximately 10 miles south of Athens. The population was 1,717 at the 2010 census.

History

Albany was founded in 1817 by a group of settlers from New England. The village was named after Albany, New York, the capital of the state. The first settlers were mostly farmers, and the village grew slowly. In 1825, the first post office was established, and in 1831, the first school was built.
In 1845, the first railroad line was built through Albany, connecting it to Athens and other nearby towns. This allowed for the growth of the village, and by the late 19th century, Albany had become a thriving community.
