Winton Summary

Winton is a small town located in Hertford County, North Carolina. It is situated on the Chowan River, approximately 30 miles from the Virginia border. The town was founded in 1790 and is the county seat of Hertford County. The population of Winton was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Winton is located at 36°25'25" North, 76°59'45" West (36.423, -76.996). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Winton is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The town is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants. The town also has a few small industrial plants, including a furniture factory and a plastics plant.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,541.7 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 845 housing units at an average density of 708.3 per square mile (273.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 68.2% White, 28.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 17.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
