Warrenton Summary

Warrenton is a town located in Warren County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Warren County.

History

The town of Warrenton was established in 1779 by the North Carolina General Assembly. It was named for Dr. Joseph Warren, a Revolutionary War hero who was killed at the Battle of Bunker Hill. The town was laid out in a grid pattern with a central square, which is still the center of the town today.
The town was an important trading center during the antebellum period, and was home to several prominent families. The town was also the site of a major Civil War battle in 1865. The Battle of Warrenton was fought between Union and Confederate forces, and resulted in a Confederate victory.
