Lowgap Summary

The area that is now known as Lowgap was first settled in the late 1700s by a group of German immigrants. The town was originally known as “Low Gap”, and was named after the low gap in the Blue Ridge Mountains that the settlers used to access the area. The town was a thriving agricultural community for many years, with tobacco, corn, and wheat being the primary crops. The town also had a number of small businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, and a grist mill.
In the early 1900s, the town began to experience a decline in population as many of the residents moved away in search of better economic opportunities. The town was further impacted by the Great Depression, and by the 1950s, the population had dropped to just over 200 people.
