Littleton Summary

Littleton is a town located in Halifax County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Halifax County.

History

Littleton was founded in 1786 and was named after the Little family, who were among the first settlers in the area. The town was incorporated in 1891.
Littleton was the site of the Battle of Littleton during the American Civil War. The battle was fought on April 2, 1865, between Union and Confederate forces. The Union forces were victorious and the Confederate forces retreated.

Geography

Littleton is located at 36°25'25" North, 77°59'45" West (36.423, -77.996). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Littleton's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The town is home to several large farms, including the Littleton Farm, which produces corn, soybeans, and wheat. The town is also home to several manufacturing companies, including Littleton Manufacturing, which produces furniture and other wood products.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,420.2 people per square mile (548.3/km2). There were 817 housing units at an average density of 622.3 per square mile (239.9/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 57.45% White, 40.45% African American, 0.22% Native American, 0.22% Asian, 0.05% Pacific Islander, 0.60% from other races, and 1.01% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.30% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 20.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 22.3% from 45 to 64, and 18.1% who were 65 years of age or older.
