Enfield Summary
Enfield is a town located in Halifax County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,945 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Halifax County.
History
Enfield was founded in 1741 by William Enfield, a Quaker from Pennsylvania. The town was originally called Enfield Town, but was later changed to Enfield. The town was incorporated in 1887.
Enfield was the site of a major Civil War battle in 1865. The Battle of Enfield was fought between Union and Confederate forces on April 10, 1865. The Union forces were victorious and the Confederate forces retreated.
Geography
Enfield is located at 36°25'25" North, 77°50'45" West (36.423, -77.846). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.
Economy
Enfield's economy is largely based on agriculture and manufacturing. The town is home to several large farms, including the Enfield Farms, which produces corn, soybeans, and wheat. The town is also home to several manufacturing companies, including Enfield Manufacturing, which produces furniture and other wood products.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 2,945 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,323.2 people per square mile (510.3/km2). There were 1,183 housing units at an average density of 527.2 per square mile (203.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 57.45% White, 39.90% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.17% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 1.41% from other races, and 1.87% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.45% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.2% were married couples living together, 20.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 30.7% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.60 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
