Dobson Summary

Dobson is a small town located in Surry County, North Carolina. It is situated in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, about 25 miles north of Winston-Salem. The town was founded in 1848 and named after the Dobson family, who were among the first settlers in the area. The population of Dobson was 2,919 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Dobson is located at 36°25'25" North, 80°45'45" West (36.423, -80.763). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.3 square miles (3.4 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Dobson is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants. The town is also home to a number of manufacturing companies, including a furniture factory, a textile mill, and a plastics plant. The town is also home to a number of small farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, and tobacco.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 2,919 people, 1,093 households, and 745 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,232.3 people per square mile (862.2/km2). There were 1,183 housing units at an average density of 902.3 per square mile (348.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 87.2% White, 9.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.7% of the population.
