White Swan Summary

White Swan is a small unincorporated community located in Yakima County, Washington, United States. It is located on the Yakama Indian Reservation, and is home to the Yakama Nation. The population of White Swan was 1,890 at the 2010 census.

History

White Swan was originally inhabited by the Yakama people, who were part of the Sahaptin-speaking peoples of the Columbia Plateau. The Yakama people were hunter-gatherers who lived in the area for thousands of years before the arrival of Europeans.
The first Europeans to visit the area were fur traders, who arrived in the early 19th century. The first permanent settlement in the area was established in 1855, when the U.S. Army established a military post at Fort Simcoe. The fort was abandoned in 1858, but the area remained inhabited by the Yakama people.
In 1887, the federal government established the Yakama Indian Reservation, which included the area that is now White Swan. The town was officially established in 1902, when the first post office was opened. The town was named after a nearby lake, which was named for the white swans that lived in the area.

Geography

White Swan is located in the Yakima Valley, in the southeastern corner of Yakima County. It is situated at the confluence of the Yakima and Naches Rivers, at an elevation of 1,068 feet (326 m). The town is located about 25 miles (40 km) southeast of Yakima, the county seat.
The climate in White Swan is semi-arid, with hot summers and cold winters. The average annual precipitation is 8.5 inches (216 mm).
