Waverly Summary

Waverly is a small town located in Pierce County, Washington, United States. It is situated on the banks of the Puyallup River, about 25 miles south of Tacoma. The population was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Waverly was first settled in the late 1800s by a group of settlers from the Midwest. The town was originally called "Puyallup City" and was later renamed "Waverly" after the Waverly Hotel, which was built in the area in 1891.
The town was incorporated in 1909 and was named after the Waverly Hotel. The hotel was built by the Northern Pacific Railroad and was used as a stopover for travelers.

Geography

Waverly is located at 47°10′N 122°20′W (47.17, -122.33). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.

Economy

The economy of Waverly is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several farms, including a dairy farm, a fruit farm, and a vegetable farm. The town also has several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, and a restaurant.
The town is also home to a number of tourist attractions, including the Waverly Hotel, the Puyallup River, and the Waverly Golf Course.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,845 people, 745 households, and 486 families residing in the town. The population density was 2,037.7 people per square mile (788.3/km2). There were 809 housing units at an average density of 890.2 per square mile (344.3/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 87.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.9% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 8.2% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 15.2% of the population.
There were 745 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
