Tonasket Summary

History

The history of Tonasket, Washington dates back to the early 1800s when the area was inhabited by the Okanagan people. The first European settlers arrived in the area in the late 1800s and established a trading post. The town was officially founded in 1891 and was named after Chief Tonasket of the Okanagan people. The town grew slowly over the years and by the early 1900s had a population of around 500 people.
The economy of Tonasket was largely based on agriculture and logging. The town was home to several sawmills and a flour mill. The town also had a hotel, a bank, and a post office. In the early 1900s, the town was connected to the rest of the state by the Great Northern Railway.
