Rockford Summary

Rockford, Washington is a small town located in the Spokane Valley in Spokane County, Washington. It is situated on the Spokane River, just south of the city of Spokane. The population of Rockford was 1,845 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Rockford is located at 47°41'17" North, 117°17'17" West (47.688, -117.288). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.9 square miles (2.3 km2), all of it land.

History

Rockford was founded in 1883 by a group of settlers from the Midwest. The town was named after Rockford, Illinois, the hometown of one of the settlers. The town was originally a farming community, but in the early 1900s, the Spokane River was dammed to create a hydroelectric power plant. This brought industry to the area and the town began to grow.
In the 1950s, the town was incorporated and the population began to grow rapidly. The town was home to a number of businesses, including a sawmill, a flour mill, a cannery, and a brickyard. The town also had a number of churches, schools, and a library.

Economy
