Milton is a city located in King County, Washington, United States. The population was 6,968 at the 2010 census. Milton is located between the cities of Tacoma and Federal Way, and is part of the Seattle metropolitan area.

History

Milton was first settled in 1853 by William and Mary Ann Biles, who were among the first settlers in the area. The town was originally called Bilesville, but was later renamed Milton in honor of the poet John Milton. The town was officially incorporated in 1907.
Milton was originally a farming community, but in the early 20th century, it began to develop into a residential suburb of Tacoma. The town was connected to Tacoma by the Interurban Railway in 1910, and the population began to grow rapidly. By the 1950s, Milton had become a bedroom community for Tacoma and Seattle.

Geography

Milton is located at 47°14′25″N 122°19′45″W (47.240278, -122.329167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

Milton’s economy is largely based on its proximity to Tacoma and Seattle. The city is home to several large employers, including Boeing, Amazon, and Microsoft. The city also has a number of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 6,968 people, 2,541 households, and 1,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,664.2 people per square mile (641.3/km2). There were 2,717 housing units at an average density of 645.2 per square mile (249.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 73.2% White, 8.2% African American, 0.7% Native American, 8.3% Asian, 0.2% Pacific Islander, 4.7% from other races, and 4.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.2% of the population.
There were 2,541 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 11.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.7% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 6.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.75 and the average family size was 3.22.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 28.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 9.1% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $54,846, and the median income for a family was $60,938. Males had a median income of $41,919 versus $32,813 for females. The per capita income for the city was $23,945. About 5.2% of families and 7.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 8.3% of those under age 18 and 5.2% of those age 65 or over.
