Bacliff Summary
Bacliff is a census-designated place (CDP) located in Galveston County, Texas, United States. The population was 8,619 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Houston–The Woodlands–Sugar Land metropolitan area.
History
Bacliff was originally known as Clifton-by-the-Sea, and was founded in the early 1900s. The name was changed to Bacliff in the 1920s. The origin of the name is unknown, but it is believed to be derived from the first three letters of the last names of two early settlers, Backe and Cliffe.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 5.2 square miles (13.4 km2), of which 4.9 square miles (12.7 km2) is land and 0.3 square miles (0.7 km2) (5.45%) is water.
Economy
Bacliff is home to a variety of businesses, including a number of restaurants, convenience stores, and other retail establishments. The area is also home to a number of industrial and manufacturing businesses, including a chemical plant and a paper mill.
Demographics
As of the census of 2000, there were 8,092 people, 2,845 households, and 2,092 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 1,637.2 people per square mile (631.2/km2). There were 3,093 housing units at an average density of 627.2/sq mi (241.9/km2). The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.17% White, 8.45% African American, 0.50% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.03% Pacific Islander, 8.45% from other races, and 2.45% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 20.45% of the population.
There were 2,845 households, out of which 37.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.83 and the average family size was 3.30.
In the CDP, the population was spread out, with 28.3% under the age of 18, 10.2% from 18 to 24, 29.7% from 25 to 44, 21.3% from 45 to 64, and 10.5% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 33 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the CDP was $35,921, and the median income for a family was $40,917. Males had a median income of $31,912 versus $22,917 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $15,945. About 11.2% of families and 13.3% of the population were below the poverty line, including 17.2% of those under age 18 and 10.2% of those age 65 or over.
