Nanticoke Summary

Nanticoke is a city located in Luzerne County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is located along the Susquehanna River, approximately 10 miles south of Wilkes-Barre. The population was 10,465 at the 2010 census.

History

Nanticoke was first settled in 1776 by a group of Welsh immigrants. The city was originally known as "New Cardiff" and was later renamed Nanticoke after the Nanticoke Indians, a tribe of the Algonquian-speaking people who lived in the area. The city was incorporated in 1874.
Nanticoke was an important industrial center in the early 20th century, with several coal mines and factories. The city was home to the Nanticoke Iron Works, which produced steel for the U.S. Navy during World War II. The city also had a large silk mill, which closed in the 1950s.

Geography

Nanticoke is located at 41°10'45"N 76°1'45"W (41.179167, -76.029167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all of it land.

Nanticoke's economy is largely based on manufacturing and services. The city is home to several factories, including a paper mill, a plastics plant, and a steel mill. The city also has a number of retail stores and restaurants.

As of the census of 2010, there were 10,465 people, 4,541 households, and 2,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 4,717.2 people per square mile (1,822.2/km2). There were 4,945 housing units at an average density of 2,232.2 per square mile (862.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White, 0.9% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 4,541 households, out of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 39.2% were married couples living together, 14.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 41.2% were non-families. 35.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.27 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 21.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 20.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females, there were 87.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 83.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $27,813, and the median income for a family was $35,938. Males had a median income of $30,917 versus $21,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,945. About 13.2% of families and 16.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 22.2% of those under age 18 and 11.2% of those age 65 or over.
