Millerton Summary

Millerton is a small borough located in Tioga County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the northern part of the state, about 20 miles south of the New York border. The population of Millerton was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

Millerton was first settled in 1812 by a group of settlers from Connecticut. The town was originally known as “Millersburg”, but the name was changed to Millerton in 1820. The town was incorporated in 1845.
Millerton was an important stop on the Erie Railroad, which ran through the town from 1851 to 1972. The railroad was a major factor in the growth of the town, as it allowed for the transportation of goods and people.
The town was also home to a number of industries, including a sawmill, a gristmill, a tannery, and a woolen mill. These industries provided employment for many of the town’s residents.

Geography

Millerton is located at 41°37'17" North, 76°45'45" West (41.6214, -76.7625). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.6 km2), all of it land.
The borough is located in the Tioga River Valley, and is surrounded by rolling hills and forests. The Tioga River runs through the town, and is a popular spot for fishing and canoeing.

Economy

Millerton’s economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The town is home to several farms, which produce a variety of crops, including corn, soybeans, hay, and wheat.
The town is also a popular tourist destination, as it is located close to several state parks and recreational areas. The town is home to several bed and breakfasts, as well as a number of restaurants and shops.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,817.3 people per square mile (700.3/km2). There were 476 housing units at an average density of 790.0 per square mile (305.3/km2). The racial makeup of the borough was 97.7% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.05.
In the borough the population was spread out, with 24.3% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,845.
