Greensburg Summary

Greensburg is a city located in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, United States. It is the county seat of Westmoreland County and is part of the Pittsburgh metropolitan area. The population was 14,892 at the 2010 census.

History

Greensburg was founded in 1786 by Colonel George Woods, who named it after his friend, General Nathanael Greene. The town was incorporated as a borough in 1818 and as a city in 1928.
Greensburg was an important center of the Underground Railroad during the Civil War. It was also the site of the first Catholic school in the United States, St. Mary's Academy, which was founded in 1846.

Greensburg is located at 40°18'38" North, 79°37'14" West (40.310556, -79.620556). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.2 square miles (10.8 km2), all of it land.

Economy

Greensburg is home to several major employers, including Excela Health, Westmoreland County Community College, Seton Hill University, and the Westmoreland County Courthouse. The city is also home to a variety of small businesses, including restaurants, retail stores, and professional services.

As of the 2010 census, the population of Greensburg was 14,892. The racial makeup of the city was 92.2% White, 4.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.2% of the population.
