Bethel Park Summary

Bethel Park, Pennsylvania is a borough located in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania. It is a suburb of Pittsburgh and is located approximately 10 miles south of the city. The population of Bethel Park was 32,313 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Bethel Park is located at 40°19'45" North, 80°2'55" West (40.329167, -80.048750). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 8.2 square miles, all of it land.

History

Bethel Park was originally part of Bethel Township, which was formed in 1842. The area was settled by German and Scots-Irish immigrants in the late 1700s. The area was known as Bethel Church, named after the Bethel Presbyterian Church, which was built in 1835. In 1949, the area was incorporated as a borough and was named Bethel Park.

Economy

Bethel Park is home to a variety of businesses, including retail stores, restaurants, and professional services. The largest employers in the borough are the Bethel Park School District, UPMC, and the South Hills Village Mall.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 32,313 people, 13,845 households, and 8,945 families residing in the borough. The population density was 3,945.3 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the borough was 94.2% White, 2.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 1.9% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.4% from other races, and 1.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
The median age in Bethel Park was 44.2 years. 22.2% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.7% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 22.7% were from 25 to 44; 30.3% were from 45 to 64; and 18.1% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the borough was 48.2% male and 51.8% female.
