Avella Summary

Avella is a small borough located in Washington County, Pennsylvania. It is situated in the southwestern corner of the state, approximately 25 miles southwest of Pittsburgh. The population of Avella was 1,093 at the 2010 census.

History

The area that is now Avella was first settled in the late 1700s by German immigrants. The town was originally known as “Avella Station” and was a stop on the Pittsburgh and Steubenville Railroad. The town was officially incorporated in 1891.

Geography

Avella is located at 40°14'45" North, 80°25'45" West (40.245833, -80.429167). According to the United States Census Bureau, the borough has a total area of 0.6 square miles, all of it land.

Economy

Avella’s economy is largely based on agriculture. The town is home to several farms, including the Avella Dairy Farm, which produces milk, cheese, and other dairy products. The town also has a few small businesses, including a hardware store, a gas station, and a few restaurants.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 305 families residing in the borough. The population density was 1,822.5 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the borough was 97.7% White, 0.5% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.6% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.47 and the average family size was 3.02.
In the borough, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 7.2% from 18 to 24, 27.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the borough was $35,000, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the borough was $17,845. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.3% of those under age 18 and 8.3% of those age 65 or over.
