Wendell Summary

History

Wendell was founded in 1874 by the North Carolina Railroad. The town was named after Oliver Wendell Holmes, a poet and essayist. The town was incorporated in 1879.

As of the census of 2000, there were 4,743 people, 1,845 households, and 1,323 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,128.2 people per square mile (435.9/km2). There were 1,945 housing units at an average density of 463.2 per square mile (178.7/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 79.17% White, 15.90% African American, 0.17% Native American, 0.85% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 2.45% from other races, and 1.44% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.45% of the population.
There were 1,845 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 24.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.56 and the average family size was 3.04.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.
