Valdese Summary

Valdese, North Carolina is a small town located in Burke County, in the foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains. It is situated along the Catawba River, and is approximately 30 miles east of Asheville. The town was founded in 1893 by a group of Italian Waldensian Protestants, who were seeking religious freedom and a better life. The town was named after the Waldensian Valley in Italy, and the name “Valdese” is derived from the Italian phrase “Val di Se”, which means “Valley of the Lord”.

History

The history of Valdese dates back to the late 19th century, when a group of Italian Waldensian Protestants, led by Father Joseph Massa, sought religious freedom and a better life. The group had been persecuted in Italy for their religious beliefs, and were looking for a place to settle and practice their faith without fear of persecution. In 1893, the group purchased land in Burke County, North Carolina, and founded the town of Valdese.
The town was initially a farming community, and the Waldensians brought with them their traditional agricultural practices. They also established a number of businesses, including a furniture factory, a textile mill, and a brickyard. The town quickly grew, and by the early 20th century, it had become a thriving community.
In the 1920s, the town was incorporated, and it continued to grow and prosper.
