Ossipee Summary

History
The area that is now Ossipee was first settled in 1768 by a group of settlers from Massachusetts. The town was originally called Ossipee Corner, and was incorporated in 1785. The name is derived from the Abenaki word for "black water," referring to the Ossipee River.
In the early 19th century, Ossipee was a thriving center of industry, with several sawmills, gristmills, and tanneries. The town was also home to a number of inns and taverns, which served travelers on the stagecoach route between Portland, Maine and Boston.
In the late 19th century, Ossipee became a popular summer resort destination, with several large hotels and resorts being built in the area. The town was also home to a number of summer camps, including Camp Ossipee, which was founded in 1891.
Geography
Ossipee is located in eastern Carroll County, in the foothills of the White Mountains. The town is bordered to the north by Wakefield, to the east by Freedom, to the south by Effingham, and to the west by Tamworth.
The town is situated at the confluence of the Ossipee River and the Bearcamp River. The town is home to several lakes, including Ossipee Lake, Silver Lake, and Pine River Pond.

There were 1,541 housing units at an average density of 42.7 per square mile (16.5/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 97.2% White, 0.4% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.4% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.2% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.7% were non-families. 25.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.50 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 25.7% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 41 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $41,944, and the median income for a family was $48,958. Males had a median income of $35,938 versus $25,917 for females. The per capita income for the town was $20,945. About 6.2% of families and 8.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 10.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
