Ossipee Summary

Ossipee is a town located in the foothills of the White Mountains in eastern Carroll County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 2,845 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Carroll County.

History

The area that is now Ossipee was first settled in 1768 by a group of settlers from Massachusetts. The town was originally called Ossipee Corner, and was incorporated in 1785. The name is derived from the Abenaki word for "black water," referring to the Ossipee River.

Geography

Ossipee is located in eastern Carroll County, in the foothills of the White Mountains. The town is bordered to the north by Wakefield, to the east by Freedom, to the south by Effingham, and to the west by Tamworth.
