Laurinburg Summary

Laurinburg is a city located in Scotland County, North Carolina, United States. It is the county seat of Scotland County and the home of St. Andrews University. The population was 15,962 at the 2010 census.

History

Laurinburg was founded in 1785 by William McLaurin, a Scottish immigrant. The town was named after his father, Laurence McLaurin. The town was incorporated in 1877 and has grown steadily since then.
The city was the site of a major Civil War battle in 1865, when Union forces under General William T. Sherman captured the city. The battle was part of Sherman's march to the sea.

Geography

Laurinburg is located at 34°45'25" North, 79°28'17" West (34.756944, -79.471389). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.3 square miles (21.5 km2), of which 8.2 square miles (21.3 km2) is land and 0.1 square mile (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Laurinburg is a major economic center for Scotland County. The city is home to several large employers, including Scotland Memorial Hospital, St. Andrews University, and the Laurinburg-Maxton Airport. The city is also home to several manufacturing companies, including Carolina Glove Company, Carolina Textiles, and Laurinburg Textiles.

Demographics

As of the census of 2000, there were 15,874 people, 6,072 households, and 3,845 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,921.3 people per square mile (741.2/km2). There were 6,717 housing units at an average density of 814.2 per square mile (313.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 51.2% White, 43.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.2% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.3% of the population.
There were 6,072 households, out of which 28.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.2% were married couples living together, 21.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.7% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals, and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 14.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 19.7% from 45 to 64, and 15.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 86.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 81.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $26,845, and the median income for a family was $32,917. Males had a median income of $27,917 versus $20,917 for females. The per capita income for the city was $14,845. About 19.2% of families and 22.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 30.2% of those under age 18 and 19.2% of those age 65 or over.
