History

Conover was founded in 1891 by the Catawba Valley Railroad. The city was named after the railroad's president, J.H. Conover. The railroad was built to connect the towns of Hickory and Newton.
The city was incorporated in 1895 and has grown steadily since then. In the early 1900s, Conover was a major center for the furniture industry. The city was home to several furniture factories, including the Conover Chair Company, which was founded in 1902.

The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 14.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 3.3% from other races, and 2.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.2% of the population.
There were 3,093 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 15.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 3.09.
