Clayton Summary

Clayton is a town located in Johnston County, North Carolina, United States. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham-Cary Combined Statistical Area. The population was 16,116 at the 2010 census, up from 6,973 at the 2000 census.

Geography

Clayton is located in western Johnston County at 35°37′45″N 78°25′45″W (35.629093, -78.429093). It is bordered to the north by the town of Archer Lodge, to the east by the town of Smithfield, to the south by the town of Garner, and to the west by the town of Wendell.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 24.2 square miles (62.6 km2), of which 24.1 square miles (62.4 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2), or 0.37%, is water.

History

Clayton was founded in 1869 by John D. Clayton, a former Confederate soldier. The town was named after him. The town was incorporated in 1887.
In the early 20th century, Clayton was a major tobacco market and was known as the "Bright Leaf Tobacco Capital of the World". The town was also home to several cotton mills.

Economy

Clayton's economy is largely based on manufacturing and retail. The town is home to several large manufacturing companies, including Caterpillar, Inc., which produces construction and mining equipment, and Novo Nordisk, which produces pharmaceuticals.

As of the census of 2010, there were 16,116 people, 6,093 households, and 4,092 families residing in the town. The population density was 667.2 people per square mile (257.9/km2). There were 6,541 housing units at an average density of 270.3 per square mile (104.5/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 73.2% White, 17.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 4.7% from other races, and 2.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 9.3% of the population.
There were 6,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 46.2% were married couples living together, 15.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 26.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.62 and the average family size was 3.17.
In the town, the population was spread out, with 25.9% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 32.2% from 25 to 44, 22.2% from 45 to 64, and 11.0% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 34 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the town was $45,945, and the median income for a family was $53,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $27,945 for females. The per capita income for the town was $21,945. About 8.2% of families and 10.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 14.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
