Wixom Summary

Wixom, Michigan is a city located in Oakland County, Michigan, United States. The city is located about 25 miles northwest of Detroit and is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 13,498.

History

The area that is now Wixom was first settled in 1832 by William Wixom, a veteran of the War of 1812. The area was originally known as Wixom's Corners, and the first post office was established in 1837. The area was incorporated as a village in 1867, and the name was changed to Wixom in 1871.
In the early 20th century, Wixom was a small farming community. In the 1950s, the city began to experience rapid growth as Detroit's suburbs expanded. The city was incorporated as a city in 1966.

Geography

Wixom is located at 42°31'N 83°37'W (42.5179, -83.6179). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 8.2 square miles (21.2 km2), of which 8.1 square miles (21.0 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.

Economy

Wixom is home to several major employers, including Wixom Assembly Plant, a General Motors facility that produces the Cadillac CTS and the Chevrolet Camaro. The city is also home to several smaller businesses, including a number of automotive suppliers.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 13,498 people, 5,541 households, and 3,717 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,668.2 people per square mile (644.3/km2). There were 5,945 housing units at an average density of 732.3 per square mile (283.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 87.2% White, 5.2% African American, 0.3% Native American, 3.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.3% from other races, and 2.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 5,541 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 51.2% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 27.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.44 and the average family size was 2.99.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 92.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $60,945, and the median income for a family was $71,945. Males had a median income of $50,945 versus $36,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $29,945. About 3.2% of families and 4.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 5.2% of those under age 18 and 4.2% of those age 65 or over.
