Westland Summary

Westland, Michigan is a city located in Wayne County, Michigan, United States. It is a suburb of Detroit and is part of the Metro Detroit area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 84,094.

History

Westland was first settled in 1824 by John and Sarah Ann Smith. The Smiths purchased land from the federal government and built a log cabin on the property. The Smiths named their settlement Nankin Township, after the Chinese city of Nanking. The area was later renamed Westland in 1833, after the Smiths' son, William West Smith.
In 1835, the first post office was established in Westland. The first school was built in 1837, and the first church was built in 1838. The first newspaper, the Westland Gazette, was established in 1845.

In 1848 Westland was incorporated as a village The village was reincorporated as a city in 1966

Geography

Westland is located at 42°17'45" North, 83°24'45" West (42.295833, -83.4125). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 33.2 square miles (85.9 km2), of which 33.1 square miles (85.7 km2) is land and 0.1 square miles (0.2 km2) is water.
Westland is bordered by Livonia to the north, Garden City to the east, Inkster to the south, and Wayne to the west.

Economy

Westland's economy is largely based on retail and services. The city is home to several large shopping centers, including Westland Shopping Center, Westland Center, and Westland Mall.
Westland is also home to several large employers, including Ford Motor Company, General Motors, and the United States Postal Service.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 84,094 people, 33,845 households, and 21,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,531.2 people per square mile (976.3/km2). There were 36,845 housing units at an average density of 1,111.2 per square mile (429.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 73.2% White, 19.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.7% from other races, and 3.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 5.2% of the population.
There were 33,845 households, out of which 30.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 41.2% were married couples living together, 16.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.2% were non-families. 30.9% of all households were made up of individuals, and 9.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.7% from 18 to 24, 30.2% from 25 to 44, 23.3% from 45 to 64, and 12.6% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 87.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,902, and the median income for a family was $50,845. Males had a median income of $41,845 versus $30,845 for females. The per capita income for the city was $20,945. About 9.2% of families and 11.7% of the population were below the poverty line, including 16.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
