Rothbury is a small village located in Oceana County, Michigan, United States. It is situated on the White River, approximately 10 miles (16 km) east of the city of Muskegon. The population was 1,072 at the 2010 census.

History

Rothbury was first settled in 1867 by a group of Dutch immigrants. The village was named after the Dutch city of Rotterdam. The first post office was established in 1871.
In the late 19th century, Rothbury was a thriving lumber town. The White River was used to transport logs to the sawmills in Muskegon. The village also had a brickyard, a grist mill, and a creamery.
In the early 20th century, Rothbury was a popular tourist destination. The village had several resorts, including the White River Inn, which was built in 1891. The inn was destroyed by fire in 1921.

Geography

Rothbury is located at 43°19′N 86°17′W (43.3167, -86.2833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

Economy

Rothbury's economy is largely based on tourism. The village is home to several resorts, including the White River Inn, which was rebuilt in the 1920s. The village also has several restaurants, a grocery store, and a gas station.

As of the census of 2010, there were 1,072 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the village. The population density was 893.3 people per square mile (345.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.3% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.3% from other races, and 1.2% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.7% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.7% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.43 and the average family size was 2.97.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 27.2% from 45 to 64, and 15.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 39 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
