Romeo is a small village located in Macomb County, Michigan, United States. The village is situated in the northern part of the county, approximately 25 miles north of Detroit. The population of Romeo was 2,945 at the 2010 census.

Geography

Romeo is located at 42°53′N 82°59′W (42.88, -82.98). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.

History

Romeo was first settled in 1835 by a group of French-Canadian immigrants. The village was named after the character Romeo from William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet. The village was incorporated in 1838.

Economy

Romeo is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a pharmacy, and a few restaurants. The village also has a few manufacturing companies, including a plastics manufacturer and a metal fabrication company.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 2,945 people, 1,093 households, and 809 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,457.5 people per square mile (948.2/km2). There were 1,164 housing units at an average density of 971.7 per square mile (375.3/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 95.2% White, 0.7% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 1,093 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.2% were married couples living together, 10.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.2% were non-families. 22.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.14.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 25.2% from 45 to 64, and 12.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 97.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 94.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $50,938, and the median income for a family was $58,906. Males had a median income of $45,000 versus $30,000 for females.
