Pentwater Summary

Pentwater is a village located in Oceana County, Michigan, United States. The population was 1,386 at the 2010 census. It is located along the shores of Lake Michigan and Pentwater Lake, and is a popular tourist destination.

History

The area that is now Pentwater was first settled in 1851 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as Pentwauter, a Native American word meaning “river of sand”. The village was officially incorporated in 1871.
In the late 19th century, Pentwater became a popular summer resort destination for wealthy Chicagoans. The village was home to several large hotels, including the Pentwater Hotel, which was built in 1875 and burned down in 1891.
In the early 20th century, Pentwater became a popular destination for fishermen. The village was home to several fish canneries, which processed the fish caught in the area.

Geography

Pentwater is located at the intersection of US 31 and M-116 in Oceana County, Michigan. The village is situated on the shores of Lake Michigan and Pentwater Lake. The village is located approximately 25 miles north of Muskegon and 40 miles south of Manistee.

As of the 2010 census, there were 1,386 people, 602 households, and 393 families residing in the village. The population density was 1,150.2 people per square mile. The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.3% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.7% from other races, and 1.3% from two or more races.
