Oxford is a city located in Oakland County, Michigan, United States. The population was 3,436 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Oakland County. Oxford is a small, rural community located in the northern part of the county, about 40 miles north of Detroit.

History

Oxford was first settled in 1819 by a group of settlers from New York. The settlement was originally called Oxford Township, and was named after Oxford, England. The first post office was established in 1825, and the township was officially organized in 1827.
In 1837, the township was divided into two parts, Oxford Township and Addison Township. The village of Oxford was incorporated in 1867.

Geography

Oxford is located at 42°45'25" North, 83°20'45" West (42.756944, -83.345833). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.2 square miles (5.7 km2), all land.

Demographics

As of the census of 2010, there were 3,436 people, 1,323 households, and 890 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,541.2 people per square mile (595.2/km2). There were 1,521 housing units at an average density of 690.2 per square mile (266.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.2% White, 0.9% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.7% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 0.9% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.2% of the population.
There were 1,323 households, out of which 33.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 13.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.2% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 3.13.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 25.7% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 28.7% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 13.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females, there were 95.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
