Mackinaw City Summary

Mackinaw City is a village in Cheboygan County, Michigan, United States. The population was 806 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cheboygan County. The name of the city is derived from the nearby Mackinac Island, which was named after the Ojibwe word mikinaak, meaning "turtle".

History

Mackinaw City was first settled in the late 1700s by French fur traders. The area was part of the Northwest Territory until 1805, when it became part of the Michigan Territory. In 1818, the Treaty of Saginaw was signed, ceding the land to the United States.

Mackinaw City is located at the northern tip of the Lower Peninsula of Michigan, at the southern end of the Mackinac Bridge. The village is situated on the Straits of Mackinac, which connects Lake Michigan to Lake Huron.

As of the 2010 census, there were 806 people, 393 households, and 212 families residing in the village. The population density was 667.5 people per square mile (257.9/km2). There were 463 housing units at an average density of 382.5 per square mile (147.7/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.3% White, 0.2% African American, 0.4% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.2% of the population.
There were 393 households, out of which 22.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.2% were married couples living together, 9.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 43.2% were non-families. 37.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 15.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.05 and the average family size was 2.63.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 19.2% under the age of 18, 6.2% from 18 to 24, 24.2% from 25 to 44, 28.2% from 45 to 64, and 22.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 45 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $31,250, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females. The per capita income for the village was $19,945.
