History

Holly was first settled in 1832 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was originally known as "Hollysburg" and was named after the holly trees that grew in the area. The village was incorporated in 1873.
In the late 19th century, Holly became a popular tourist destination due to its proximity to Detroit. The village was home to several resorts, including the Holly Hotel, which was built in 1876. The hotel was destroyed by fire in 1891.
In the early 20th century, Holly became a popular destination for automobile enthusiasts. The village was home to several auto racing tracks, including the Holly Speedway, which opened in 1915. The speedway closed in the late 1950s.

There were 2,521 households, out of which 32.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 12.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.7% were non-families. 28.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 11.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.41 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 24.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 29.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 14.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 93.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 90.2 males.

The per capita income for the village was $22,945.
