Hesperia Summary
Hesperia is a small village located in Oceana County, Michigan, United States. The village is situated on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, approximately 20 miles south of Muskegon. The population of Hesperia was 1,093 at the 2010 census.
Geography
Hesperia is located at 43°25'25" North, 86°14'17" West (43.423, -86.238). According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km2), all land.
History
Hesperia was first settled in 1854 by a group of settlers from New York. The village was named after the Greek goddess of the dawn, Hespera. The first post office was established in 1856.

Economy
Hesperia's economy is largely based on agriculture and tourism. The village is home to several small businesses, including a grocery store, a hardware store, a restaurant, and a gas station.
The village is also home to several fruit farms, including the Hesperia Fruit Farm, which produces apples, peaches, and cherries. The village also has a winery, the Hesperia Winery, which produces a variety of wines.
Demographics
As of the census of 2010, there were 1,093 people, 441 households, and 287 families residing in the village. The population density was 908.3 people per square mile (351.2/km2). There were 471 housing units at an average density of 391.7 per square mile (151.2/km2). The racial makeup of the village was 97.2% White, 0.2% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 0.2% from other races, and 1.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.
There were 441 households, out of which 28.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 11.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.3% were non-families. 30.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.09.
In the village, the population was spread out, with 25.2% under the age of 18, 8.2% from 18 to 24, 25.2% from 25 to 44, 24.2% from 45 to 64, and 17.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 38 years. For every 100 females, there were 94.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 91.2 males.
The median income for a household in the village was $33,750, and the median income for a family was $41,250. Males had a median income of $30,000 versus $21,250 for females.
