Ferndale Summary

Ferndale, Michigan is a city located in Oakland County, Michigan, United States. It is a suburb of Detroit and is part of the Detroit metropolitan area. As of the 2010 census, the city had a population of 19,900.

History

Ferndale was first settled in 1873 by James McPherson, who purchased 40 acres of land from the Detroit and Bay City Railroad. The area was originally known as McPherson’s Station, and the first post office was established in 1876. The name was changed to Ferndale in 1891, after the local ferns that grew in the area.
In the early 1900s, Ferndale was a small farming community. The city was incorporated in 1918, and the first mayor was elected in 1921. The city grew rapidly in the 1950s and 1960s, as many people moved to the area from Detroit.

Geography

Ferndale is located at 42°27′N 83°7′W (42.45, -83.12). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 3.2 square miles (8.3 km2), all land.

Economy

Ferndale’s economy is largely based on the automotive industry. The city is home to several automotive suppliers, including Lear Corporation, Magna International, and TRW Automotive. Other major employers in the city include Beaumont Health, DTE Energy, and the City of Ferndale.

Demographics

As of the 2010 census, there were 19,900 people, 8,717 households, and 4,945 families residing in the city. The population density was 6,200.3 people per square mile (2,387.2/km2). There were 9,541 housing units at an average density of 2,988.2 per square mile (1,154.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 79.2% White, 14.3% African American, 0.4% Native American, 2.2% Asian, 0.1% Pacific Islander, 1.2% from other races, and 2.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.2% of the population.
There were 8,717 households, out of which 25.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 37.2% were married couples living together, 14.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 43.7% were non-families. 35.2% of all households were made up of individuals, and 10.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.25 and the average family size was 2.94.
In the city, the population was spread out, with 22.2% under the age of 18, 9.2% from 18 to 24, 33.2% from 25 to 44, 22.7% from 45 to 64, and 12.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 35 years. For every 100 females, there were 91.2 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 88.2 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,945, and the median income for a family was $51,945. Males had a median income of $37,945 versus $30,945 for females. The per capita income for the city was $22,945. About 8.2% of families and 11.2% of the population were below the poverty line, including 15.2% of those under age 18 and 8.2% of those age 65 or over.
