Barryton Summary

Barryton, Michigan is a small village located in Mecosta County, Michigan. It is situated on the banks of the Chippewa River, approximately 20 miles northeast of Big Rapids. The village has a population of approximately 1,000 people and is part of the Big Rapids, Michigan Metropolitan Statistical Area.

History

Barryton was founded in 1871 by William Barry, a lumberman from Canada. He purchased the land from the government and began to build a sawmill and a small village. The village was named after him and was incorporated in 1887.
The village grew slowly but steadily over the years, and by the early 1900s, it had become a thriving community. The village was home to a variety of businesses, including a general store, a blacksmith shop, a hotel, a bank, and a post office.
In the 1920s, the village began to decline as the lumber industry began to decline. The sawmill closed and many of the businesses in the village closed as well. The population of the village began to decline as well, and by the 1950s, the population had dropped to just over 500 people.
